This is a handy little no-frills book to have, especially if you are new to slow cookers, would like to improve your use of slow cookers, or would simply like 14 basic meat and 3 stock recipes all in one place. The author spends the first ten pages on basic slow cooker information -- what it is, ease and convenience of slow cooker cooking, what to do for best results, mention of a few products by brand, a list of useful helpful hints -- and includes a small but expected section that ties slow cooking to Paleo eating. The book is easily navigable, clickable TOC, very few typos (only in the narrative, not in the recipes), prep times and serving sizes are given, ingredients are in list form, steps are numbered, and five different stock-type food photos are thrown in for good measure. Photos do not accompany each recipe, but if you take the recipes as instructions to follow and are not looking for a reading or story experience, then photos would be nice and have added appeal but are not necessary.

After the introduction and how-to pages, the author provides three basic stock recipes: chicken, beef, and vegetable. You will need these because, of the 14 meal recipes, 11 require one of the three types of stock. Eleven of the meal recipes require ingredients that will be familiar to Paleo cooks: coconut oil (Tender BBQ Beef Ribs, Comforting Beef Stew, Hearty Beef Pot Roast, Spicey Pulled Beef); apple cider vinegar (Homemade Meatloaf); coconut milk (Curry Chicken); and almond flour (Comforting Beef Stew). A few odd ingredients like coconut aminos (Tender BBQ Beef Ribs) and Hawaiian sea salt (Kalua Pork & Cabbage) are not explained. Two recipes specify "paleo-friendly" but offer no explanation: paleo-friendly red or yellow curry paste (Curry Chicken) and paleo-friendly sausage (Chicken & Sausage Gumbo). This may or may not be a problem, but could require extra research to find out what the heck those mean and what to avoid in keeping it Paleo. Tender BBQ Beef calls specifically for gluten-free Worcester sauce, but Braised Short Ribs merely call for Worcester sauce.

Overall, this is a nice basic reference and go-to book to have that doesn't require ingredients that catch you off-guard -- the stocks alone are good, even for non-paleo -- you can use the types of meat you would usually buy (beef, chicken, pork, lamb), and the variety (soups, stews, chili, meatloaf, gumbo, whole meat) provides enough ideas to let those creative juices simmer while you're busy doing something else. Five stars because the author delivered what he promised, for a price of free (like today) or 99-cents I say go for it, the listed digital $3.99 would be maybe and, unless significantly enhanced compared to the digital, the $8.92 print edition would probably go on my Wish List.
