A small but valuable piece of writing for anybody concerned about the natural world ! I would recommend buying this book.
This book is an early environmental classic (1915), wherein the Michigan farm-raised father of American horticulture and chairman of Theodore Roosevelt's Country Life Commission merged fundamental principles of biblical stewardship with insights from the life sciences. His views have great relevance for the environmental crisis; in fact, when it comes to values, they are cutting edge . Liberty Hyde Bailey, Jr. (1858-1954) inspired both Aldo Leopold (A Sand County Almanac) and Wendell Berry (The Unsettling of America, The Way of Ignorance). His father was a latter-day Puritan who allowed his son to read Darwin. The founding Dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and author of sixty-five books, Bailey, Jr. was a truly remarkable American. His prose is from an earlier time, but clear and accessible. The ideas are both timely, and timeless. Read it. Give copies to your friends. Then pick up Wendell Berry.
